In Arujá, a small city in São Paulo’s metropolitan region, a family home built by the client’s grandfather was passed down through generations. Now the property belongs to his grandson, who lives there with his wife and two children. Seeking to preserve the emotional legacy of the space while adapting it to contemporary family life, the couple turned to Afetto Architecture for a thoughtful renovation.
Led by architects Vitor Guimarães and Giullia Aguiar, the project focused on updating key areas of the home — including the living room, the couple’s bedroom and bathroom, and the eldest child’s bedroom. Natural light, wood textures, and Brazilian design pieces are used to create an atmosphere that invites permanence and comfort.
Spatial continuity and visual softness
In the living room, a custom-built piece of furniture connects the two front windows, organizing the layout while enhancing the flow between the living and dining areas. Concrete finishes paired with wood veneer create a balanced, understated base, while a gallery wall of organic mirrors and nature-inspired artwork adds a softer, more personal touch. Linear lighting set in black metal tracks highlights standout Brazilian pieces, such as the Cilindros bench and Mustafa armchair by Breton, as well as the Urbana coffee tables by Roberta Banqueri.
A clean and comforting private zone
In the couple’s bedroom, a light color palette and indirect lighting create a restful ambiance. The TV is subtly embedded into a mirrored wall panel, reinforcing the clean visual lines of the space. The adjacent bathroom was completely redesigned to accommodate a spacious jacuzzi, with Portobello tiles adding richness and texture to both floors and walls. A custom black metal shower enclosure completes the space with refined, made-to-measure detailing.
A personal surprise for a growing child
The renovation respected the original structure of the house and was carried out in phases to accommodate the family’s routine. One of the most meaningful moments of the process involved the eldest child’s bedroom: as a birthday gift, the space was transformed while he was away on a trip. In just seven days, it received a completely new layout and identity — personalized and expressive, without falling into clichéd children’s themes.
Discreet in tone but powerful in meaning, the project by Afetto Arquitetura reconnects past, present, and future through a contemporary lens grounded in memory and emotional connection.
