The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), currently spread across several locations in Addis Ababa, is to move to a centrally-located single building. The new premises are an opportunity to provide efficient and functional high quality. The desire to create an open and inviting nature in productive and inspiring surroundings is driven by the diversity of the programme and the prominent city location. The design combines Ethiopian tradition with a forward looking bank. A bank in which everyone feels at home. At the center of the junction between Yohanis and Ras Desta Damtew Street, it is visible from all parts of the city and located near major buildings such as the Ministry of Defence, the National Theatre, the Gandhi Hospital, the stadium and so on. From Metskel square at the heart of Addis Ababa, the bank will become a striking icon for this district.
The national ‘Commercial Bank of Ethiopia’ imparts this identity in fulfilling its public function. The new head office combines business functions with public programmes which include commercial and catering functions as well as conference and sports amenities. The ain structure provides space and flexibility for programme components for both individual and common use. Local building methods and energy conscious measures form the basis for the design which has been developed according to the LEED-gold principle. The open structure of the building draws the city in and the inviting character of the bank creates a direct link with the environment. A bank with a high social worth which supports the needs and wishes of the Ethiopian population. .
