This guest house and artist's studio in a secluded site in the Hamptons was designed in a primitive Italianate style inspired by the paintings of Giotto.  Situated around a central courtyard, the L-shaped building culminates in a tower that offers a viewing promontory from its hilltop location.  The earth-toned stucco façade provides a vibrant backdrop for the verdant setting, which extends to the house with potted plants and flower-beds.

In contrast to the exterior’s exuberant palette, the interior exudes a cool modern calm perfect for showcasing the owner’s artwork and furnishings. One wing is devoted to the owner's art studio - a large open space illuminated by diffused natural light that pours in from the overhead skylights, and sizeable enough for both creating and displaying her large canvases. The adjoining wing houses comfortable guest living quarters under an exposed gabled roof, a private retreat from which to view the garden and its ruins that evoke ancient Rome, including a 200-ft-long ruined garden wall from a 1920s estate that subsequent owners had left on the site.
