The Europaschule Linz is a multi-award-winning training school affiliated with the University of Education Upper Austria, where personal development and the assumption of responsibility are encouraged. To continue upholding these values, an EU-wide open design competition was announced for the school’s expansion, which we were able to win. 

The expansion will consist of a central, two-story connecting structure. To accommodate this, the existing central wing will be demolished and rebuilt. The new building will serve as a link between the existing, independent sections of the classroom wing and the gymnasium building—the school’s new center. In accordance with historic preservation guidelines, the axis of the new center is set back from the front of the existing classroom wing and, through the slight curvature of the facades, creates a connection between the two existing building sections.

While the construction of the new central wing has created a new, barrier-free entrance and provided modern access to the school building from Honauerstraße, the classroom wing is being reorganized both functionally and spatially. Particular attention is being paid to preserving the existing structure as much as possible; it is being renovated to a high standard in close coordination with the Federal Monuments Office. At the same time, the original spatial qualities and structures—which have been altered over time—are being carefully restored or revealed in order to once again bring to life the architectural potential of the historic building.
