The parking garage Windmuehlgasse in Vienna is located near the popular shopping street Mariahilfer Strasse in the 6th district and conveniently situated close to viennese attractions as well as cinemas and parks. This urban area attracts a young and dynamic crowd, which was taken into consideration in the planning of the spatial graphics and signage system for the parking garage.
The parking garage itself is a 5-floor building with three exits leading in different directions. All measures have been implemented in the existing architectural structure of the garage. Our task was to create an artistic design concept including letterings and a signage system for the interior and the entrances as part of a necessary overall renovation. Most of the architecture was not modified which means we were working mainly with surface design and two-dimensional measures.
The new design reflects the liveliness and urban density of the surrounding area. Stripes, bright colors, striking signs and unusual materials combined with simple letterings make the garage appear playful, friendly and clearly structured at the same time. The garage entrance/exit as well as the staircases have all been given a distinctive color to accentuate them and to distinguish between the three exits that lead pedestrians in different directions. These design elements are also carried to the outside in a restrained form, e.g. the façade in the Raimundhof is covered in stripes in light gray to match with the design on the inside.
The walls are covered in dark anthracite to highlight the cars and the parking spots are marked as “islands” deliberately placed on the floor next to each other.
The signage system differs between labels for cars and pedestrians which also implement the color of the exit they lead to.
