Home@Work: A multifunctional space for a multimedia artist

The project task involves the reconstruction of the office space on the ground floor of a residential building, covering an area of 42 m², to accommodate the work and life of a multimedia artist. The main design parameter was to maximize the versatility of the space through budget-friendly solutions. The primary purpose of the space is to serve as a hybrid: primarily a photography studio, a living area for a certain period, and a venue for various gatherings.

Since the investor is active in the film and video industry on a large scale, the design and execution of the space were focused on high-quality acoustics, considering its location on one of the city's main thoroughfares. Given that this was a reconstruction of a commercial space, the layout of the living and service areas was reversed compared to what would typically be considered a favorable orientation for residential spaces. The service areas, including the kitchen, restrooms, and storage, are located in the south and have an exit to the back of the building, while a large multipurpose room—designed to function as a bedroom, living room, party space, photography studio, and recording studio—is oriented to the north, facing the street.

By designing and placing curtains in two specific areas, the space can be divided into smaller functional zones, depending on usage. The selection of materials, textures, and colors was influenced by the artist’s request to optimize sound and light dispersion within the space. The walls and ceilings are insulated with sound-absorbing wood fiber panels, and the curtains are stage curtains with specific acoustic properties. Dark tones of flooring are used to create an optimal working environment by minimizing unwanted reflections. At a time when working from home is increasingly popular, this project effectively integrates living and workspace.
