"House for mother" is the first house completed by Förstberg Ling, a project started in 2013 as a part of the housing exhibition in Linköping, Vallastaden 2017. The house is conceived as a dwelling and studio for Björn's mother Maria, librarian and an enthusiastic weaver.

"House for mother" is a house that balances spatiality with intimate rooms - formal simplicity with strong materiality. The facade in raw corrugated aluminium creates a variable play with light and shadow during the day, a rich materiality contrasting with it's simple expression. The wooden beams and trusses along with the walls lined with plywood give warmth to the interior. The concrete floor is a durable and beautiful surface for everyday use, folded to a low bench along the perimeter of the building.

The division of the house into two volumes, slightly shifted from each other, emphasizes how narrow the plot is. While standing in the open for now, the future urban context will eventually not expose much more than the gables to the neighborhood.

A sight for light-worshipping eyes, ‘House For Mother’ balances spatiality with intimate rooms and formal simplicity with strong materiality. The facade in raw corrugated aluminium creates play with light and shadow during the day while wooden beams and trusses along the walls lined with plywood give a warmth to the interior. The concrete floor is a durable and beautiful surface for every day use that is also multifunctional, folding up along the perimeter of the building and transforming into a bench and a shelf.

Interior fittings come from the well established Danish brand VOLA, while furnishing come from Sweden’s Hem furniture.

More from the Manufacturer:

“House for mother” is located in Linköping, Sweden, and part of the Linköpingsbo 2017 housing exhibition. The house is divided into two parallel volumes slightly shifted from each other, thus creating spaces both in front of and behind the building. Oriented to the park in the north and the alley in the south, the two adjacent gables emphasize the overall theme for the area in general: narrow plots and a variation of housing types. The first volume contains the kitchen, dining room and living room, with the bathroom and laundry room housed in a smaller cabin within the structure. The second volume, partly in two levels with a less inclined roof, provides the bedrooms and a small studio. Facades and roof are covered with raw, corrugated aluminium while the interior is warm with an exposed timber structure and walls lined with plywood. The polished concrete floor folds up along the perimeter of the building and transforms into a bench and shelf.

Brand description
Danish design is about the enduring power of craft, style, sustainability and honest materials. For half a century, Vola has epitomised this approach, making taps, showers and accessories that combine simple, elegant shapes with innovation in form and function. Vola has been involved in some of the world’s best-known contemporary buildings since 1968, when Vola owner Verner Overgaard invited celebrated architect Arne Jacobsen to collaborate. The result was the birth of the iconic Vola 111 shape, the company’s first product, designed for the National Bank of Denmark. It attracted immediate international acclaim, combining simple circular and linear forms with revolutionary plumbing hidden in its walls – Vola had, in fact, created the first fully integrated, single lever mixer tap. By setting this benchmark for minimal contemporary design and high standards of process and manufacturing, Vola is often imitated but never matched. Today Vola products are internationally recognised as true design icons. For five decades, expert knowledge and specialist skills have come together to create and innovate. The company places such emphasis on craftsmanship and longevity that some of its earliest products are still fully operational today. Vola is both the original modern tap designer and a multi award-winning brand that brought contemporary Danish design to the home.
