Conceptual framework
The KDV Golf and Tennis Academy project is located on Queensland’s Gold Coast and comprises an extensive overhaul of the previous Carrara Gardens Golf Course facility.
The core concept was that it would be used for both professional sports training and provide a recreational space for its local community.
We created a single, flexible plan accommodating diverse multi-functional spaces to give the building a modern elegance.
The design’s inspiration came from Mies van der Rohe’s “architecture of silence,” and we aimed to institute a free-standing building open to many sides, linked to nature.
Transparency and reflection bring the outside environment into the building, to which exposed concrete creates contrast, with the mirrored soffit drawing the image of the sky onto its glass walls.
Clearly framing the activities taking place within, the reflections enable the building to announce itself from a distance, with a presence greater than its envelope.
Public and Cultural Benefits
At its opening, Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate declared that the Academy is an important addition to the 2018 Commonwealth Games Sports Precinct which it adjoins.
