From urban object to Architectural Landscape

MAHDI MARABE as Architects

The project examines the relationship between an Urban object in the city and its
impact on the Urban context and how to transform such an object into a
contextual architecture. Our site is located in the Neukölln neighborhood in
Berlin, a special site that separates different parts of the neighborhood, a sharp
change of levels that stops the movement abilities between the areas. A huge
urban object is located on the site, a large and opaque warehouse structure, built
over a timeline, and each part of the building was added at a different time, this
can be identified through the section of the building and by identifying various
construction technologies that indicate the period of build up.
The first thing we wanted to do was to turn this architectural object from a
detached object into a part of the landscape, from a blocked and detached
structure to an open Urban architectural element that connects the different
areas around it, allowing continuity between the levels. We also wanted to
connect between the street and the landscape by crossing the street through the
building as a one unit , turning it into an inviting space and to an urban center,
and that is by turning interior spaces into functions used by black programs like
gym ,swimming pool, etc. in addition to integrating various services, such as
business and employment with social housing that continues the enjoyable
sequence of living in the neighborhood, which will contribute to the residential
neighborhood characterized as a the known immigrant neighborhood. We
wanted to give a new interpretation to the different types of residential block in
the neighborhood and to offer different tenant relationships and by providing
diverse housing units to suit different types of tenants. The Architectural Urban
Spaces enables employment for all housing units in addition to entertainment
venues connecting the tenants with the rest of the neighborhood, including the
various visitors.
