Koloni House [an architect's home]

In the suburban landscape of Paphos, where the terrain gently descends towards the horizon and the rural field dissolves into distant sea views, the house is conceived as a quiet frame for light, air, and continuity. It settles into the slope rather than upon it, allowing the landscape to pass through and around it, shaping both its form and its experience.

The project is organized across two levels—ground and first floor—ensuring that all primary spaces orient southwards to capture both the sea view and the movement of the sun. A continuous glazed façade establishes a direct visual and spatial relationship with the exterior, while a slender horizontal slab projection mediates this openness, providing necessary protection from intense summer radiation without diminishing transparency.

Embedded partially into the terrain, the house forms a protected rear volume, reinforcing a sense of enclosure against the slope. Above, the bedroom level extends outward to a roof garden, offering an elevated outdoor space that reconnects the domestic realm with the broader landscape.

The ground floor gathers all common functions into a single open-plan environment. Living, dining, and kitchen areas unfold as one continuous space, structured by a linear staircase that runs along its length. This element becomes both circulation and spatial device, its elongated form allowing for lower risers and a more gradual, comfortable ascent.

The architectural approach revisits the ethos of modernism through clarity, proportion, and structural expression. The material palette remains deliberately restrained: fair-faced concrete, exposed metal elements, and untreated surfaces define the interior atmosphere. Construction is not concealed but articulated—each component expressed in its true materiality, forming a disciplined and coherent composition.

Environmental performance is integral to the design. The south-facing orientation maximizes passive solar gain during winter, while the projecting slab acts as a horizontal shading device in the summer months. On the east and west façades, vertical reed screens filter the lower-angle sunlight, introducing a softer, diffused luminosity into the interior while adding a lightweight, permeable layer to the building envelope.

The structural system is resolved with precision, integrating functional elements into the architectural language. Features such as the exposed metal staircase are treated not as secondary components but as integral parts of the spatial narrative, reinforcing an architecture grounded in honesty and clarity.

Ultimately, the house operates as a contemporary reflection on modernist principles—an exploration of openness, material truth, and measured restraint, where living unfolds in continuous dialogue with the landscape.
