The project for the Residential N4 seeks to highlight the construction technology of reinforced concrete. This way, the proposal exposes almost the entire supporting structure of the building. Its pillars, beams and solid slabs are left in apparent concrete. This kind of finishing is used to express one of the points of the architectural concept.
The project solves the insertion of 4 townhouses of 90 m2 each in a 260 m2 plot with two fronts. It is located on the first block next to the beach, on the north coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil.
The implementation is extremely rational and proposes the division of the land lot in 4 equal parts. Each unit has a front patio, which complements the living area of the ground floor as open spaces. On the upper floor there is a large balcony, which serves the master suite with a beautiful view of the place. It explores the view of the local natural landscape, particularly the beach and the sea. Internally, a straight concrete staircase connects the two floors of each unit.
Formally, the residential complex aims at showing materials in their natural state. In addition to the exposed concrete and wooden decking, solid exposed bricks are used in some parts, such as on the wall that closes the suite´s bathroom and the upper balcony, as well as the circular volumes located on the roof that house the water tanks and the barbecue area located in the ground floor. Circular black metallic tubes solve the four chimneys. The balconies´ guardrails and access gates are made of straight profile black metallic fences vertically arranged.
The garages´ waterproofed slabs and the front setback of each unit are finished with river pebble stones. A wooden deck extends the house´s social area to the external space. Sliding glass panels integrate the house´s social area to the front deck and the side garage.
Glass ceilings over the bathroom stalls that are not next to the facade bring ventilation and natural lighting to these areas.
Two solid cantilevered flat slabs configure the suites´ balconies and their own roofs. The slabs´ swing is of 2m and they are 15cm thick. They are represented by two horizontal light lines that float and demarcate the facade design. For this reason, it is important that the height of the sharing wall of the balconies is lower than its ceiling height, in order to avoid touching the upper slab.
Plasticized wood was used for the structure execution. It gave to concrete surfaces a smooth appearance that highlighted the work materiality and the characteristics of the material used in it.
For closing the concrete structure, some masonry walls were painted in white and other walls were left in solid brick. The frames were made of transparent tempered glass and black aluminum.
Some principles that guided the project were: the aesthetic exploration of the constructive technique of reinforced concrete, the relationship with the local landscape, a design with simple lines, using of materials in their natural appearance and the utilization of natural lighting through the large openings.
