Oasis House
Robert Majkut Design

Can we live in the desert (again)?

The Oasis House is a double house – an outer openwork house that acts as a screen, shield, dome and boundary for the lush inner garden. It connects to the outside world through doors, openwork structures, openings and tilting glass elements. It welcomes the movement of light and air. Its function is to protect and shield the inner ecosystem of the garden and the second, inner house standing in that garden, which does not need a roof, thick walls or tight windows because it is protected by the outer house. It gives it shade, coolness, a microclimate and protection.

The inner house is a collection of interconnected fluid, organic forms, like a system of interconnected bubbles that hide the most private functions and places within. And all this communal, family openness takes place outside the inner house – in the inner garden between the outer shell and the inner house. Here, among the lush greenery, are places for family meals, meetings, work, reading and play. Here are nooks and open spaces to hide or to be together.

The essence of this house is to be in an oasis, lush green, a place that is protected but also connected to the outside with regulated access and gradations of privacy. Hidden within an oasis, the inner house is a sculpture and everything that happens within it has degrees of privacy. But this house can open up to the gardens, the pool, the nature.

It is a private oasis.

Oasis
In a hot, dry desert climate, the oasis is a life-giving, green, vibrant and desirable place. It serves as a resting place on the journey that leads people between them.

Home
The oasis marks the beginning of any settlement, providing shade, water, vegetation and the opportunity to grow crops or raise animals. It embodies the comforting presence of nature, with trees and shrubs providing shelter from the wind and sun.

Protection
Even an oasis can be vulnerable to powerful and sudden natural phenomena. Its value lies in its resilience. Like a person seeking shelter from the heat, an oasis or garden needs care and support.

Technology
Human skills can protect fragile ecosystems from overwhelming forces, maintain their vitality and support their bounty, minimising the risks of disrupting the natural cycle. We can build and support what we value, including nature, with infrastructure.

Protect
By creating a thoughtful system of protection for the entire ecosystem, we give these micro-worlds a chance to exist beautifully and fruitfully. At the same time, we offer people the opportunity to live in this friendly environment, which blossoms like a botanical garden in an orangery.
