The municipality of Sittard-Geleen is situated in the southern part of the Netherlands near to the Belgium and German border. The historic city centre of Sittard, with many listed monuments, started an ambitious urban renewal plan under the name ‘Zitterd Revisited’ designed by the architect Jo Coenen. Several international architects were involved in designing the apartment blocks. Central in the planning area stood a retirement home with 144 identical apartments and a community centre, built in 1973. The owner of the building, the foundation for social housing known as ‘Zo Wonen’ participated in the governmental initiative for the revitalisation of the city centre at the same time. They decided to give the 31 year old building an ambitious renovation to guarantee a substantial number of social dwellings with a low rent within the new city development. This has been done for relatively lower investment costs than newly built dwellings. Thus, waste of resources has been reduced as much as possible. 15 of the 144 apartments had to be eliminated. 66 Apartments (50m2) were completely renovated and 63 apartments got beside this a large extension (up to 65m2 living space) At the side of the former community centre, 28 new apartments have been built (80m2). A covered parking and the new community centre with study classes and a celebration space are placed in the middle of the complex with a great panorama on the historic town centre. The existing building has been painted white after the renovation. The new additions, the new apartment block and community centre are wrapped around the existing volume in anthracite slate stone plates with aluminium profiles. Nowadays the Odaflat is pulling into synchronism with the adjacent apartment blocks of the master plan in execution.
