Past Romance

A compact space with oodles of character, this newly completed project saw Blakey Apartment redesigned to within an inch of its life. Open and airy, its contemporary classic aesthetic in a heritage setting sees earthy hues accent the crisp white and grey surfaces, forging a sense of understated opulence.

The heritage building started life in 1902 as a hospital administration ward and was later transformed into permanent residencies. With such rich history comes a level of architectural detail that cannot be replicated, and in this case the Stylesmiths™ chose to honour the original built environment when approaching the design intent. Led by design duo, Kirsten Dahl-Feathers and Carlie Ng, the Stylesmiths™ London worked to maximise every inch of the home’s interior by crafting spaces that not only hero the original build but allow for modern contemporary living.

Prior to the renovation the apartment was home to three young university flatmates. The two-bedroom apartment had admittedly taken a dive with the original mezzanine used as a makeshift sleeping quarters for the third tenant, accessed via a rickety spiral staircase. It’s fair to say this home lacked in desirability, but the potential was very much there. A new staircase was added, with wide plank vintage timber flooring that is consistent throughout, making room for a concealed European laundry below the staircase.

After a bit of planning, it was decided that the mezzanine would be extended out in width, with the help of structural engineers, to make room for a built-in library and desk which has since been filled with our client’s impressive collection of books. Swing arm sconces are attached to the joinery for warmth and ambience, complete with a custom armchair and footstool, the soft wool tartan beckoning to be sat in with a cuppa.

Downstairs in the communal area, the kitchen is highly detailed yet simple and classic with panelled joinery, curved marble bench tops set on top of a custom designed fluted base. Radically estranged from the dark and constricted zone that existed prior, now our clients can entertain at ease with a new island bench that allows for flow from one end to the other.

A clean, paired back palette of stone and fabric, ensures the apartment never feels overcrowded. Bronze fixtures and fittings have been dotted throughout adding an element of warmth to the tranquil space. From French tapware to chic handles, even the bumble bee door knocker as you walk in, all add to the overall charming interior that welcomes peace and serenity.

Three incredible bay windows really make the space special, and each has been given an individual purpose. In the main bedroom, soft roman blinds bring attention to the custom window seat with cushion top and drawer storage underneath, sitting snugly in the curve as a spot to read and watch over the city, sun soaked even in the winter months.

The living features a custom tan leather banquette that sits perfectly in the alcove, maximising the space to fit a walnut dining table and overhead antique cloche pendant that creates a warm glow for intimate dinner parties. Receiving less light but just as beautiful outlook, the second bedroom uses its window nook to house an antique desk that serves as an additional peaceful study space.
