PINK THREAD

A Kypseli apartment renovation with upcycling at heart by TRAIL [practice]

The apartment is situated in the heart of Kypseli, within a 1970s building that stands as an exemplary model of Athenian modernism. Trail Practice aimed to emphasize the distinctive characteristics of the apartment, crafting a narrative that blends heritage, craftmanship and functionality.

The design process began with an elaborate mapping of materials, techniques, emotions, and memories, connecting Athenian modernist architecture, the neighborhood’s unique character, and the homeowner’s personality. This complex interplay of tangible and intangible elements was translated into impactful interventions that function as parts of an architectural collage.

Trail Practice’s philosophy is rooted in the principles of recycling materials and techniques. Existing materials, fragments of the apartment’s history, were repurposed in new and unexpected ways. Remnants from marble courtyards, which would have otherwise been discarded, now form part of an alternative mosaic wall in the bathroom. Similarly, glass panels found in the apartment have been revived as doors, allowing light to flow freely through the spaces.

The new materials added to the construction offer a contemporary perspective on the owner’s aesthetics while making the space’s atmosphere more personal. The concept of a marble skirting board, was introduced, serving as a narrative thread that connects past to future, while it unravels from one room to another. The bold choice of Rosa Portogalo marble reflects the owner’s playful vision and our team’s eagerness to experiment. The pink marble board changes in size and shape, transforming into a unique detail in each room: from the opening between the living and dining areas to the kitchen wall tiles, the floating shelves that connect the hall to the guest bedroom, and the recycled large pink marble tile in the bathroom.

Pink Thread project is an example of how Trail Practice can transmute the owner’s vision into a dynamic discourse of art, craftmanship and functionality.
