With the new SAP Labs Munich Campus in Garching, SCOPE Architekten have created a forward-looking office building that reflects the urban and academic vision of Science City Garching - one of Europe’s leading research centers. The project marks a milestone in the long-standing partnership between SAP and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), bringing together around 600 employees and 120 researchers to collaborate on future topics such as sustainability, mobility, Industry 4.0 and commerce.
Urban Vision Meets Architecture
Located at the starting point of the so-called “Science Loop,” the building serves as an architectural gateway to the research campus. The design translates the masterplan’s academic ideals into a coherent building structure: three staggered volumes cluster around a central atrium, creating layered transitions between inside and outside, public and semi-public zones. The structure integrates harmoniously into its urban context and enhances connectivity across the site.
Connecting Society, Research and Industry
A key feature of the building is its open and inclusive character. The ground floor integrates publicly accessible spaces such as the Vital Bar, an auditorium and an SAP experience area. These functions establish the atrium as a vibrant interface between university, company and the broader public – encouraging transparency, exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Architectural Composition
Silver-anodized metal pilasters articulate the façade, forming a hierarchy that corresponds to the different uses within the building. A coarser rhythm defines the base and parking levels, while the upper stories - used by SAP and TUM - are more finely detailed. The result is a proportionally balanced ensemble that unites presence and precision.
A Framework for Flexibility
Designed as a “simple” and adaptable structure, the building follows the principles of Reuse – Reduce – Recycle. Homogeneous materials and demountable elements ensure long-term flexibility: even the open parking deck is prepared for future transformation into office space. This conceptual clarity responds to the evolving needs of hybrid work environments and sustainable construction.
The Atrium: A Social Core
At the heart of the building lies a five-story, light-filled atrium. Framed by open galleries and communicative zones, the space connects SAP, TUM and the public. It is bordered by shared uses such as the auditorium, a Vital Bar, and an SAP experience area. A red spiral staircase acts as a sculptural connector between levels and becomes a symbolic spine for exchange and interaction.
Human-Centered Work Environments
Office spaces for SAP and TUM are arranged around the atrium and support a wide range of work scenarios - from concentrated focus to creative collaboration. Future-ready meeting rooms and hybrid work zones are complemented by a spacious cafeteria with rooftop access, and a dedicated SAP Work Café offering informal, multifunctional environments. Additional outdoor areas, including a landscaped rooftop above the parking garage, promote health, well-being and spontaneous encounters.
