Located in the District’s thriving NoMa neighborhood, the Batley infuses the residential environment with a custom theme of lived-in luxury that promotes artisan craft and farm-life, by incorporating the history of the neighborhood in every element of the design.
To capture the soul of the original building, designers looked to the neighborhood for inspiration and salvaged pieces of the old warehouse to incorporate into the new residential property including, file cabinets put on display as custom works of art and a “cash and carry” neon sign that was converted into a dining table. Additional materials like wooden planks and metal mesh materials are embedded throughout the space while the botanical mural along the fitness facility and entrance walls, as well as the magnified cowhide wallpaper in the common areas pay homage to the neighborhood’s marketplace roots.
Community amenities are designed to make socializing with new neighbors comfortable and relaxing while also providing quiet touch down areas for residents to work. The designers included plush lounge seating that could easily be used for reading or working as well as exciting games such as shuffleboard, classic arcade machines, and a hand-made Scrabble wall, to accomplish a sense of “effortless” fun.
An expansive rooftop deck provides stunning panoramic views of Union Market and historic downtown DC year-round as residents enjoy access to a heated salt-water pool, community bar, modern grilling equipment and al fresco dining with access to fresh herbs at every corner, another subtle nod to the market design concept. A Nanawall creates a seamless indoor outdoor experience for those looking to entertain on the roof, with an endless array of luxurious seating options centered around a large interior kitchen.
