The project consists of the renovation of a 190 square metre penthouse within the former Borletti factory complex in Milan, which has recently undergone a renovation project. The clients wanted an intimate and cosy home, where at the same time they could receive numerous guests on special occasions. These requests led the project towards a specific spatial and visual identity, suitable for embodying the desire for refined domesticity and sophisticated representation. The choice of furnishings, materials and colours contributes to the construction of this imagery.
Without radically altering the distribution of the rooms, but by implementing a series of spatial solutions, the project has created a balanced atmosphere, characterised by a neutral colour palette with balanced contrasts, and a variety of materials and textures.

The layout includes a clear distinction between the sleeping area and the living area. The former is characterised by a clear and functional organisation of the rooms, the latter by a greater fluidity and continuity of spaces. Through a number of expedients it has been possible to mitigate the initial spatial characteristics, giving the owners new flexible spaces characterised by visual trajectories and different but adjacent environments. The sharp geometries that characterise the rooms have therefore been juxtaposed with furnishings with soft shapes, to give a sense of greater cosiness and comfort.

The living room space, characterised by a significant height in relation to its width, has been visually re-proportioned through the choice of materials and through a three-part height division. From bottom to top: a dark wenge floor, a band of light-coloured wood panelling with essential mouldings, an intermediate band painted in a warm colour to accommodate paintings, shelves and furnishing objects, and a high band bordered by a profile covered in brushed brass, with integrated indirect lighting.

The points of discontinuity separating the living room from the other rooms - entrance, kitchen and hallway - are characterised by three-dimensional materials and surfaces. A diaphragm of glass and walnut strips (Rimadesio) between the living room, kitchen and sleeping area creates interesting spatial continuity and plays of reflections. In the absence of a real entrance, the entrance has been designed as a niche completely lined in canned walnut, which integrates a small wardrobe, a tray and some technical devices.

The living room conversation area is oriented towards the large terrace to the east, so as to become, in fine weather, a space in direct continuity with the outdoors.
On the other hand, the choice of materials and colours reinforces the visual continuity and unified character between the living room and the kitchen.

The latter includes a small dining area, enriched by a corner with Fornasetti's Nuvolette wallpaper, with sober tones and a delicate design rich in details, in assonance with the character of the project.

Another design expedient to soften the spatiality of the rooms was the careful design of the false ceilings: the corridor is punctuated, at the pillars, by a number of low ceilings with tapered edges and integrated lighting; in the master bedroom, the false ceiling softens the geometry of the room and gives greater intimacy to the bed area.

The balance between refined domesticity and sophisticated representation is sought in all the rooms, including the bathrooms, where the preciousness of details and materials accompanies the idea of a space dedicated to one's own well-being. The largest is conceived as a real salle de bain in which components and finishes have been selected in search of contemporary elegance.
