Desert Accommodation, cultural center on the edge of the Saudi desert

Desert Accommodation is a conceptual project for a contemporary guesthouse and cultural center located on the edge of the Saudi desert. Conceived as a minimalist oasis, the project explores the relationship between architecture, landscape, and climate, responding to the vast scale, silence, and extreme environmental conditions of the desert.

The architectural concept is based on a clear functional structure and an immersive spatial experience that emphasizes monumentality and restraint. Low-rise monolithic concrete volumes are arranged into strict geometric compositions that echo the massiveness of dunes and their ever-changing tones. Rather than competing with the landscape, the architecture seeks to dissolve into it, allowing the desert to remain the dominant presence.

A sequence of inner courtyards forms the spatial and climatic core of the project. Gardens, ponds, and pools introduce water as a cooling and sensory element, creating a protected microclimate that mitigates extreme daytime heat and sharp nighttime temperature drops. Recessed spaces, deep shadows, and thick walls enhance thermal comfort while reinforcing a feeling of seclusion and refuge.

The layout of the complex is carefully designed to ensure both visual and acoustic privacy for guests. Circulation paths unfold gradually, revealing framed views of the surrounding desert and reinforcing a sense of discovery. Openings are precisely positioned to capture panoramic horizons while maintaining intimacy and protection from the harsh climate.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the project’s atmosphere. The use of monolithic concrete emphasizes weight, permanence, and tactility, while its neutral tones reflect the colors of the desert landscape. Minimalist and ascetic architectural language reduces visual noise, allowing light, shadow, and natural textures to define the spatial experience.
