A summer house in Bodrum, opened to the Aegean

Mandarin Oriental 03 is a 670 m² summer house on the hills of Bodrum, designed around a single idea: a bright, airy and timeless home that opens itself to the Aegean. Every decision, from the plan to the smallest piece of joinery, follows from the wish to bring daylight into every room and to keep the sea present wherever you stand.

The house begins with the view. The entrance and the staircase were positioned so that the moment you step inside, the eye travels through a tall, stone-lined hall and past the stair void straight to the Aegean. Rather than a hallway that leads to the view, the arrival itself becomes the view, and the staircase frames it rather than blocks it.

The house is built from the natural materials of its geography. Rough walls of natural stone quarried in the Muğla region, laid by hand by a local stonemason, run through the entrance and the main circulation, giving the interior the weight and texture of the Bodrum landscape. Against them, unstained oak does the finer work: louvred shutters, slatted screens, wall panelling and built-in storage were all crafted by Turkish joiners.

In the bathrooms, red travertine is used unfilled, its open pores and warm veining left exactly as the stone was found; lime plaster, pale stone floors and a basin carved from a single block complete a palette that is calm, tactile and meant to age gracefully. The walls carry works by Armenian and Turkish artists, keeping the house anchored in its own part of the world.

The plan is organised for light and for summer living. Living and dining spaces open fully to the terraces and the pool, bedrooms are oriented towards the sea, and tall openings bring daylight deep into the house. Timber shutters and screens let each room be tuned through the day, from full openness in the morning to filtered shade in the afternoon heat. Furniture is kept low and relaxed, so the architecture, the materials and the horizon remain the protagonists.

Using stone from the Muğla region and a local master mason keeps the house rooted in its landscape and sustains a craft that has shaped Bodrum's architecture for centuries; entrusting the joinery to Turkish artisans keeps the work within the local craft economy. Mandarin Oriental 03 is a house that belongs to the Aegean, built by hands from the place it looks out on.
