NS House is a contemporary reading of the Istanbul house. Set within a classical urban villa in Etiler, the project reworks the building from the inside, reorganising its plan for the life of a contemporary family while giving it the warmth, ornament and sense of craft of a traditional Istanbul home.
Rather than importing a finished look, the interior was shaped by hand. Turkish artisans crafted the ornate plaster ceilings, and local craftspeople produced the marble work, tile panels and joinery that give the house its identity. Patterned black-and-white marble floors run through the hall and kitchen, dark timber cabinetry with brass details sits beneath the ceilings, and bespoke woodwork frames doors, shelving and storage. A work by Sedat Girgin rises along the staircase, a piece by Emin Mete Erdoğan anchors the living room, and the bird-branch pendant over the dining table is Perch Light by Umut Yamaç for Moooi.
Every room makes one clear decision. A black-and-white striped dining table with cantilever chairs brings graphic energy to the dining area, while the living room is calmer, with cream modular sofas, dark velvet armchairs and a large circular wall relief over herringbone parquet.
The staircase is the heart of the house: seen from above, its void draws concentric rounded rectangles that descend through every floor. The powder rooms are allowed to be more expressive, one wrapped in blue-and-white wallpaper, the other in dark chinoiserie beneath a crystal starburst light. In the main bathroom, banded Marmara marble meets a border of hand-painted İznik-style tiles, and the bedrooms are kept quiet and restful.
The villa's original layout was substantially reworked. Rooms were reorganised around the staircase and the garden views, generous built-in storage keeps surfaces clear, and a study, a children's collection wall and private bathrooms give each member of the household a place of their own. Classic modern furniture sits alongside collected and commissioned pieces, so the house can keep evolving without losing its balance.
