Okavango Residences explores how the qualities of domestic architecture can inform a contemporary model for safari hospitality. Rather than organising accommodation as a collection of guest suites connected by communal facilities, the project reimagines the traditional safari lodge as a series of private residences, bringing the intimacy, permanence and familiarity of home into an immersive wilderness setting.
Situated along the banks of the Okavango River, the architecture responds to the contrasting conditions of the site. Dense riverine woodland creates a sense of concealment on arrival, before the landscape gradually opens towards the river and expansive floodplains beyond. The residence is conceived around this transition, with a sequence of sheltered spaces, landscaped courtyards and framed views revealing the landscape gradually as one moves through the architecture.
The plan is organised around a central pavilion containing the primary living, dining and kitchen spaces, flanked by independent bedroom wings that establish a clear distinction between communal living and private retreat. Landscaped courtyards replace conventional internal corridors, drawing vegetation, daylight and natural ventilation deep into the residence while continually blurring the boundary between architecture and landscape. Outdoor spaces become a natural extension of the interiors: deep roof overhangs provide shade, a rim-flow pool visually merges with the horizon, while private terraces, internal gardens and a sunken boma create more intimate places for retreat.
Materiality is fundamental to the project's sense of place. Rammed earth forms the primary architectural language, complemented by concrete pigmented with locally sourced soil, mud brick flooring, natural timber and textured stone. Local materials and regional craftsmanship are prioritised over decorative expression, allowing texture, irregularity and the traces of making to remain visible. Surfaces are considered not only for their appearance, but for the way they respond to changing light, weather over time and reinforce the relationship between the building and its setting.
The interiors continue this restrained approach through a palette of earth, timber, stone and tactile textiles. Furniture, lighting, art and objects are treated as extensions of the architecture rather than independent decoration, bringing together contemporary African designers and selected international makers connected by craftsmanship, sculptural form and material honesty. The intention is to create spaces that feel layered and collected rather than conventionally styled, expressing luxury through authenticity, permanence and belonging rather than excess.
Ultimately, Okavango Residences proposes a quieter relationship between architecture and the African landscape. Rather than imposing itself upon its setting, the architecture becomes a framework through which the landscape can be experienced — allowing light, vegetation, water, materiality and the changing rhythms of the Okavango to become an integral part of everyday living.
