'Upcycle Lamp’ is a series of lamps made by Benjamin Spöth. Carefully crafted from leftover high quality birch plywood. Such a pity to throw away all the leftovers at the wholesale – the designer thought – and started cutting down the two and a half meter long pieces into millimeter thin slices. These slices assembled in different ways makes a family of five lamps: three rather smaller and two bigger versions.
While playing around with different pieces, the lamps finally got their shape. Multiplex wood is an interesting material to work with for a lampshade. Every second layer of the plywood shines the light through the material due to the thin slices in combination with the structure of the grain. Some parts of the lamps are steamed before bend in shape in order to stay in the desired form. These different pieces combined offering another layer - play of shadow and light.
The family of five lamps, which are all crafted by hand had been presented during the Dutch Design Week 2014 in Eindhoven for the first time. Benjamin Spöth is selling these lamps exclusively via his website and selected other design shops. Prizes starting from 199,- Euro.
