A new office for Azan, a Polish distributor of premium pet food, isn't located in a city centre or an office building. It was built next to the company's own warehouse, in a logistics park near Radom, in central Poland.

Offices like this are usually the poor cousins of the workplace world: a few rooms bolted onto a hall, done to a minimum. There are thousands of them across Europe.

We agreed with the client at the very start that this one would give people the same experience we design into the best city buildings.

The constraint was floor area. A single space had to hold desks for both office and warehouse staff, meeting and training rooms, a canteen, a coffee point and locker rooms. So the rooms had to earn their keep twice over. The canteen and the conference room open up into one training and events space, the shared areas change use through the day.

Lots of greenery, wood and warm, earthy colours, because it should feel like somewhere you'd want to spend a Tuesday.

The reason we're proud of the Azan project is simple: for the people working there, this kind of change is genuinely life-changing in a way a refit in a good building rarely is.
