Volume and Subtraction: A Single-Family Residence in a Subdivision.

Within the orderly fabric of a residential subdivision, where houses tend to resemble one another and fade into the background, this single-family residence takes the opposite approach: it inserts itself into the lot with decisiveness. The project stems from a precise brief, that of a home able to command presence without need for emphasis, relying instead on the strength of a simple and rigorous idea. The starting point is a regular rectangular prism, a primary and compact form. From this solid, portions of volume are subtracted according to the rhythm of an orthogonal grid that governs the entire building. The project thus works by subtraction rather than addition: the void becomes the tool through which the mass is shaped, articulated, and made habitable.

The rectangular plan unfolds over two levels above ground. At the center, a vertical circulation core acts as the building's backbone, dividing each floor into two distinct bands and clarifying both the functional organization and the reading of the spaces.

On the ground floor, entry is through a portico, itself carved out by subtracting volume and marked by a light well. The light well finds an echo inside, in the double-height entrance hall, which serves as a hinge between the spacious living area and the dining room. The north band, meanwhile, houses the service areas and ancillary spaces, leaving the brightest parts for daily life.

The upper floor hosts the sleeping area, with four bedrooms and their bathrooms. A private outdoor space, acting as a filter between interior and surroundings, ensures privacy while maintaining a constant dialogue with the landscape.

The elevations are defined by regular square openings, carefully aligned to generate visual cones that connect the domestic interior with the outdoors. The design of the facades is not merely a compositional matter: over the course of the day, light passing through and grazing the openings produces alternations of solid and shadow that highlight, hour by hour, the building's most characteristic points.

For materials, reinforced concrete was chosen to emphasize the massiveness of the generating form. The compactness of the material returns the original volume in its entirety and makes the voids legible as deliberate gestures, incisions in a unitary block.
