MaE House
Maxime Brouillet

Urban cozy home

ALEXANDRE BERNIER ARCHITECTE as Architects

Live in the heart of the city. A neighborhood street, charming and lively. The transformation of the MaE residence aims to offer a welcoming and relaxing place so that its occupants can experience urbanity while preserving the sensitive qualities of the house and its environment. Receive, meet with friends, but also be a homebody, rest, take refuge, read a book, snuggle up, recharge your batteries, find yourself. Attention focused on a sensitive atmosphere linked to the individual's experience and his daily life: a counterweight to the speed, tumult and dispossession of the present time imposed by contemporary urban life.

The space develops meticulously over the course by a work in hollow where the open area which is gradually revealed, elusive at a single glance. A plurality of views and perspectives emerge, countering the monotony often associated with contemporary open spaces. At the entrance, a narrowing with a view in a row welcomes us. A closed office room gently compresses the passage from the entrance to the living space which is revealed, at the back of the house. The corridor is punctuated by a step that subtly underlines the transition between the reception area and the privacy of the living spaces. This device also makes it possible to gain in ceiling height, giving the space an impression of grandeur contained in a small house. The living room, simply furnished and flexible in its layout, is found in the center while the kitchen is nestled hollow behind a technical volume. The kitchen is nestled in a hollow, behind a technical volume. The horizontal planes of the kitchen counters are freed from the tall cabinets which contributes to the lightness of the space. The equipment and storage are visually erased from the kitchen to find themselves in an adjoining pantry, The dining room, lit by a diaphanous light, is housed in a hollow alcove overlooking the living room . A light staircase lit by a large skylight leads upstairs. The den, flooded with natural light and populated by a multitude of plants, takes the form of a winter garden where it is good to daydream on gray, rainy or snowy days. This interior garden opens onto an intimate terrace overlooking the backyard.

The materials of the original house found during the work such as the concrete block, the brick and the wooden planks were highlighted for their texture and sensoriality, in contrast to the smooth and standardizing Placoplâtre.
The facade, interface with the street, has been renovated while honoring the original composition: the orange glazed brick has been recovered and then renewed, the wooden corbels of the balconies have been redone while the slate and the metal cornice have been revived by local craftsmen. The MaE house is experiencing a new life and projects it onto the street, to the delight of walkers in the neighborhood
