The new buildings mediate between the orthogonal building structure in the garden city-like neighbourhood and the sloping course of the street.
The spatial constellation is supported by the daylight guidance and visual axes, while the ensemble character is strengthened by the specific volume design and homogeneous materiality of the two buildings (infra-lightweight concrete for all exterior walls).
Direct daylight from changing directions is a constant companion in both buildings, while views from outside are minimised.
The cubature and height development of the ensemble reacts subtly to expectations:
The house for the guests is reduced in volume, is slightly lower in height and thus gives way to the main family building.
Striking recesses and the projecting upper storeys create sheltered terraces and outdoor areas.
The entrances to the street are also protected by the projecting upper storeys.
The structural design of the main building focusses the communal family area on the dining area and the sheltered terrace, while at the same time protecting it from outside views and opening it up to its own outdoor area to the south and west.
Both buildings are heated by a groundwater heat pump.
Foam glass gravel (made from recycled glass) was used as perimeter insulation for components in contact with the ground.
Roof areas are extensively greened, roof and surface water are infiltrated on site.
Native plants can be found in the open spaces.
The garden city-like character of the estate was taken up in the design of the buildings: views through to the green areas at the rear, facing away from the street, are possible while at the same time protecting the terraces and private open spaces from outside views, as well as the light and "open" demarcation of the property from the public space (no hedges, no opaque fences).
Both buildings are constructed in monolithic infra-lightweight concrete. The 45 cm thick monolithic exterior walls comply with the current ENEV values.
The insides of the exterior walls were also left in exposed concrete, allowing the monolithic construction method and the spatial structures to be experienced inside the buildings.
The concise spatial structure and differentiation of the materials used in the building are continued in the interior fit-out. The early inclusion of the planning of built-in furniture and the selection of furnishings was an elementary part of the design process.
