Mandy Graham is pleased to announce her recently completed (Jan 2019) personal residence in Palos Verdes, California. The home is a 4bd/4ba, 2,400 sqft 1928 Spanish cottage nestled under a canopy of eucalyptus trees and surrounded by rustic landscape including lavender, olive trees, and agave. Decomposed granite, flagstone pavers, terra-cotta tile roof and smooth stucco exterior suggest a Spanish/Mediterranean esthetic.
This was an extensive renovation down to the original framing. The original layout was honored as to embrace the warmth and charm of an older home. While keeping the existing footprint, two additional bathrooms were created as to maximize space and function. Virtually every element in this home was modified entirely by Graham, adding a theme of arches and barrel ceilings including thickening the walls as to inset the windows, creating wider thresholds and integrated cabinetry.
There’s something both comforting and bold about the purity of classical architecture paired with contemporary details. With a minimal canvas in mind, all traditional carpentry work was omitted including window casings, base molding and window/door trims. A combination of natural walnut and limestone floors give the home warmth, texture and timeless elegance. The walnut floors were custom made to emulate unfinished planks. The limestone was cut from unfilled slabs and kept in its original raw/pitted state. Graham paired antique hardware and designed custom art deco sconces to embrace the past and add necessary soul to the minimal aesthetic.
Graham designed the kitchen cabinetry and bathroom fixtures with the same attention to detail as she demonstrates in her furniture collections. The cabinets are solid walnut and the soapstone countertops are inset and framed by the rounded doors at each end. Graham custom painted the La Cornue range and mimicked the same finish/color throughout the kitchen with metal panels on the lower cabinets and pair of integrated refrigeration columns.
Much of Graham’s furniture collection is scattered throughout the home and layered with noteworthy antique and vintage pieces and art. The home is a transformation resulting in a serene experience that embraces both the old and the new.
