Qatari Villa in Qatar, Doha

William Garvey Ltd as Manufacturers

British Furniture Designers & Makers, William Garvey, work with award winning British interior designer, Katharine Pooley, and design and make bespoke furniture for a suburban new build villa in the modern city of Doha, Qatar: www.williamgarvey.co.uk/gallery/villa-in-qatar/

Located within walking distance of the recently built Museum of Islamic Art, which sits on a man-made island, Doha is a multicultural city oozing confidence and style and is considered ‘the shining jewel of Qatar’: just like this inner-city dwelling.

Expressing different cultural identities from around the world, this residential project successfully introduces both traditional British woodcraft and international design values into an urban environment.

In light of this artistically visual design brief, William Garvey had to work with a high degree of accuracy to create quality pieces of furniture for the family that occupy this intercontinental inspired villa. Following an on-site survey in Qatar by William Garvey, conceptual drawings were then created with the collaboration of Katharine Pooley and then approved and made at the Garvey workshop in Devon.

From concept to completion, William Garvey were responsible for project management, surveying, working drawings, CNC, manufacture, polishing, installation, materials and delivery to Doha. The bespoke furniture for this private project includes:

Ground floor Entrance foyer

Double Front Door – located at the main entrance, these inward opening double doors and frames, with two adjoining interior doors were designed and made to tolerate varying temperatures: 50˚c outside, versus 18-20˚c inside. Creating a distinct transition from weathered teak on the outer portion of the door that changes in to ebonised teak on the interior face [polish satin finish]. Each door features inlaid thick bronzed brass strips, with the bottom of each door retained by a solid brass water-bar. Double door total dimensions are (H)3060mm x (W) 1875mm, with each solid teak door frame at (H)165mm x (W)65mm.

Salon

Sliding Doors – A pair of bespoke Moroccan-style sliding doors with eglomise glass panels and teak frames. Dimensions: (H)2739mm x (W)2165mm. Eglomise is a process that introduces a gilded pattern on the surface of a piece of glass which is then protected by a second piece of glass fitted on top: each door is gilded and varnished.

Powder Room

Washstand – majestic in its design with early Colonial features, this bespoke Washstand measures (H)865mm x (W)570mm x (L)1400mm and is made with an ebonised American walnut exterior with inlaid horizontal strips of brass. Designed with a stepped construction, this ornate washstand has four drawers with ebonised walnut interiors and all inlaid brass work was carried out in-house by William Garvey.

First floor

Gallery

Fitted Cupboards and Doors – evoking the Art Deco styling of the 1920s synonymous with Western Europe, are these beautifully designed cupboards with geometric gilded door fronts. Hung on custom made pivot hinges, it measures (H)2530mm x (W)1200mm and features a single shelf with practical hanging rail and Pure White [RAL 9010] painted interiors.

Wardrobes – a pair of double cupboards with single overhead storage, measuring in total (H)3160mm x (W)2423mm. These fitted wardrobes have Rosewood interiors and also Rosewood frames, which perfectly inset the Altfield Kyoto Hemp fabric wrapped door panels for a tactile surface texture that exudes ‘Ma’, the Japanese interior design principles for creating a zen interior.

Dressing Table - Rosewood integrated dressing table and mirror

Chest – Rosewood chest with glass fronted drawers and glazed countertop, measuring (H)1110mm x (W)700mm x (L)970mm.

Wardrobes – For the height of visual impact, the second bedroom features an expanse of Magenta fitted wardrobes. Not just any door front, these wardrobes embrace the art of East Asian soft furnishings with Japanese fabric wrapped doors and painted frames.

Bedroom 3

Wardrobes & Desk – complete wall of wardrobes with integrated central desk alcove, overall size (H)2884mm x (W)3130mm. Interior storage solutions include both full and half height hanging, with fixed shelves and drawers. The classically English white painted interior, door frames and back panels provide the perfect backdrop to the Phillip Jeffries Japanese Silky Strings Hope Diamond Wallpaper that adorns each door panel.

Bedroom 4

Wardrobes – Dimensions of the double wardrobes are (H)2300mm x (W)786mm which are capped by overhead cupboards measuring (H)830mm x (W)786mm. The wardrobe interiors feature full and half height hanging options, alongside fixed shelving and drawers. Each door front is finished with recessed fabric panels in the ever popular Garret Stripe in a mix of navy blue, grey and biscuit beige.

Play Room

Designed for the family’s three growing children, the play room had to accommodate plenty of storage and a practical work area for play and study, which are qualities of Scandinavian design: an aesthetic marked by minimalism and functionality. Desk Storage – Lacquered storage unit measuring a total (H)3130mm x (W)300mm x (L)679mm. Featuring painted doors, drawers, carcase and four cantilevered shelves.
