Refurbishment of the Confectionery Factory Facades

Refurbishment of the Confectionery Factory Facades

The main production building of the Kiev confectionery factory has been growing and changing for more than a hundred years. It survived changes in its function and in various production technologies. Today it is entering a new phase of development - production workshops give way to offices for company employees and various public functions. The factory fence was moved further and a park for entertainment and recreation is being set up.

Ideologically the project of restoration adheres to the Venice Charter. This means that each of the periods of life of the building is important, and no fake reproduction of elements that no longer exist is acceptable.

The entire building was covered in a paint layer which hid the differences between its various parts. After the removal of the layers of various decoration accumulated for decades, it turned out that the volume of the production building consists of three parts. This is a pre-revolutionary male dwelling-house from the "Kiev" yellow brick, a Soviet workshop in a pink brick and a prefabricated concrete building in the former courtyard of the dwelling-house.

The three-story volume of a former residential building is visually separated from the Soviet additional storey by new metal finish. The massive concrete cornice that used to unite the Soviet and pre-revolutionary parts is partially dismantled, and the volume of the cornice at the level of the third floor of the residential building is reproduced from the metal. Expanded at different periods and for various reasons windows return to their original sizes.

Ground floor of the Soviet workshop used to be a semi-basement. Now the ground floor will house facilities for visitors and guests - production demonstration center, flagship store, restaurant, coffee lounge and office lobby.

The modern reinforced concrete annex gets a metal envelope.
