Contemporary cities are not defined solely by physical resilience; they are complex organisms shaped by social transitions, regulated movements, and distinct traces. Rhythm Ankara emerges as a response to this complexity, making it possible to interpret and transform it through architecture. The project frames the fragments of traditional building clusters as a distribution that disrupts regular architecture. Within a permanent space shaped globally by pandemics, migration, and digitalization, evolutions become traceable in Ankara.
In response to forms of encryption that have become confined to retail environments, shifted into digital realms, or rendered socially fragile, Rhythm Ankara re-establishes the relationship between architecture and cities. The spatial strategy takes shape through a high-lined spine that unites the diversity of different levels. The elevated pedestrian axis not only enables movement but also produces a continuous public space. While buildings are positioned along this spine, architectural emphasis lies in the in-between spaces that make publicness possible.
The integration of residential, commercial, office, hotel, and serviced apartment programs within a single framework departs from the logic of traditional block parcels and proposes a sectional cut of the city. Publicness is not confined to designated squares but extends across ramps, fragments, transitional zones, and level shifts. The project embodies this approach through four squares: Arcade Square, Sunken Square, City Square, and Office Square.
The differences in scale and function of these spaces collectively form a multilayered, autonomous, and contemporary public space system. Together, they cater to various user groups—residents, office workers, managers, and participants in cultural programs—offering spatial responses to the dynamics of daily urban life.
Arcade Square, with its semi-open structure, enables public circulation, provides vehicular access, and connects Ankara–Konya Highway with Tekstilciler Street. Sunken Square brings together pedestrian flows across levels, dismantling and spatially redistributing them while serving as a visual anchor. City Square, as a general boundary, houses a performing arts center and an amphitheater, strengthening collective memory. With a modest transformation, Office Plaza accommodates the daily mobility of office users and provides short-term frequency ranges and resting areas.
These four plazas, through the distribution of their spatially limiting roles, function as architectural tools that make various forms of cutting and articulation possible. Rhythm Ankara can be re-inscribed not only through architectural objects but also through the active and protective enclosures within the intervals between built forms and experiences of separation.
In a period when public space is increasingly expanding while private life turns inward, Rhythm Ankara proposes accessible, open, and integrated environments. By accommodating both introverted user units and intermittent social interactions, it spatially reinforces the intervals. In this sense, Rhythm Ankara can be used as a medium that produces a rhythm for the architectural city, a rhythm for its users, and a spatial narrative for management. Here, architecture is regulated not only through form but also through process.
