Located in the heart of the historic San Giovanni district, this 104 sqm apartment renovation by FiumeArchitecture is a sophisticated study in residential harmony. The project redefines the concept of "home" by blending the timeless charm of early 20th-century Roman architecture with a rigorous, contemporary aesthetic tailored for a private client.
Design Philosophy: Dialogue with Heritage
The architectural narrative is built around the preservation and valorization of the original 1920s "cementine" tiles. These decorative floors are treated as functional artworks; they act as geometric anchors that define the different living zones within an otherwise fluid and open floor plan. The result is a home that feels both deeply rooted in its history and entirely modern in its execution.
Architectural Interventions
Spatial Fluidity: The original, rigid internal layout was dismantled to prioritize natural light and visual continuity. A central living spine now connects the social areas, creating a sense of openness that belies the apartment’s 123 sqm footprint.
Bespoke Oak Joinery: To create a sense of warmth and tactile continuity, the project features extensive custom-made oak woodwork. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and minimalist shelving systems are integrated directly into the walls, hiding modern storage needs within clean architectural lines.
Light as a Structural Element: The lighting design is entirely recessed, using high-performance LED systems to emphasize the height of the ceilings and the texture of the materials.
