Jason Good Architectural Studio, which works in the UK and the Pacific Northwest, has transformed a 1970s bungalow into a sophisticated and serene home. This ambitious refurbishment merges timeless elegance with modern sustainability, creating a tranquil retreat that harmoniously balances light, materials, and space. The project showcases the studio's dedication to quality craftsmanship, natural materials, and thoughtful design.

The design emphasises a seamless integration of the house’s internal and external spaces, with new visual connections that invite nature into the home while preserving privacy. One key intervention is the complete thermal cladding of the exterior using patinated copper and handmade brick, which results in a visually stunning facade that enhances the building’s energy efficiency. Combining these natural materials creates a low-energy home with a rich, sophisticated aesthetic.

At the heart of the refurbishment is a new centrally located entrance hall, around which the home's open plan layout is designed. This space is pivotal, delineating public and private areas through full-height pivot doors and deep timber reveals, allowing for a fluid yet structured flow between spaces. The thoughtful layout also creates new visual connections to the first floor, offering a sense of openness and interconnectedness.

Natural light and ventilation are central themes throughout the project. A newly created double-height roof light provides passive ventilation and floods the interior with light and air. This carefully positioned roof light and etched glass blocks that filter light and screen views imbue the home with a serene and airy atmosphere. The extensive use of natural materials further enhances the quality of light, creating a calm, warm, and inviting interior.

The interior and exterior spaces are seamlessly connected, with external courtyards crafted to provide key views from inside to outside. These outdoor spaces are an integral part of the design, offering moments of tranquillity and reinforcing the home's connection to nature.
