Kevadiya Bhavan

Project Vision and Site Insights

Nestled between the Satpura and Vindhyachal mountain ranges in the Narmada district, Kevadiya is home to the 182m-tall Statue of Unity (SoU), which has transformed the region into a global tourism destination, driving socio-economic growth across a 100-km radius.

The proposed Kevadiya State Bhavan located near the SoU, on a scenic 73.85-acre site, is a monumental initiative by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) to build a cultural and administrative hub that aligns with the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or “the world is one family.” The project brief integrates well all programs into unique experience for visitors that include State bhavans, Convention centres, Riverside promenade and staff housing and recreational zones.

Design Philosophy and Strategy

The radial planning concept of the bhavan, centred around a “Circle of Unity,” represents both continuity and inclusivity, mirroring the Statue of Unity’s themes. The site’s distinct contoured terrain, with elevations ranging from +46m to +99m, and its proximity to the Narmada River guided a layout that uses only 20% of the land for built structures, reserving the remaining 80% for green spaces. This approach maintains harmony with the environment, creating a terraced landscape stepping down toward the center to maximize views while retaining a sense of intimacy. The high flood level (HFL) is respected throughout, ensuring that development is resilient to seasonal changes in the river’s flow.

Masterplan Highlights and Spatial Framework

The masterplan for the proposed State Bhavans at Kevadiya is divided into four primary zones, each with a distinct function. Overlooking the Statue of Unity, the State bhavans are arranged to reflect India’s regional divisions, symbolizing administrative unity. These bhavans feature terraced rooftops, shaded courtyards, and open green spaces, fostering a nature-integrated environment.

Centrally located, the Convention centre includes pre-function areas, conference halls, and dining facilities for state functions and public gatherings. Celebrating Indian heritage, the Cultural Streets and Unity Plaza showcase Indian art and crafts, while Unity Plaza, inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, features water elements, state flags, and emblems.

The scenic Riverside Promenade offers a cultural haat, amphitheater, performance stage, jetty, and boardwalk, creating vibrant spaces for relaxation and social interaction. It leads to the Peace Garden, a tranquil area with pathways, sculptures, and water features for reflection.

Separate pathways for vehicles, pedestrians, and cultural streets ensure efficient traffic flow. The cultural streets immerse visitors in India’s diversity through arts, crafts, and cuisine. Staff housing accommodates 2,500 residents in dormitories and 1BHK units, with dedicated dining, recreation, and transport facilities, as well as greenery and courtyards for a comfortable living environment.

The landscape design uses native, drought-tolerant plants requiring minimal irrigation, while green terraces and rooftop gardens enhance biodiversity and thermal efficiency, reducing energy loads.

Building Techniques and Sustainability Blueprint

The project emphasizes sustainability by using local, recycled materials like fly ash bricks, AAC blocks, and certified wood, sourced within 500 km to reduce the carbon footprint. Construction debris is repurposed on-site, with waste managed via a detailed tracking system. Courtyards, terrace gardens, and drought-tolerant plants minimize heat gain and conserve water, while rooftop gardens and green walls enhance biodiversity.

Rainwater harvesting with 43 percolation wells, rain gardens, and efficient fixtures enables net-zero water use, while energy-saving features like low-e glass, daylight sensors, LED lighting, and a central cooling plant maximize efficiency.

By integrating sustainable construction methods, culturally resonant design, and advanced environmental strategies, the Proposed State Bhavans at Kevadiya stands as a testament to India’s commitment to unity, sustainability, and innovation, blending its architectural heritage with modern, eco-friendly solutions.
