Finish Details - Polyurethane Clear:
The non-toxic interior polyurethane coating is clean and hard and protects the wood from dirt and abrasion. It can easily be wiped clean with a moist cloth or touched up with most water-based polyurethanes. It is not suitable for exterior applications or where the siding is consistently exposed to moisture.
Our Pika-Pika® yakisugi “shou sugi ban” products are first burned deeply black. Two rounds of wire brushing remove all loose earlywood soot from the softer spring growth rings, leaving the late wood as contrasting burnt ridges. It is a topographic, textured surface that follows the wood grain. We then hand-grade Pika-Pika products after surfacing to achieve a consistent blend of heartwood and sapwood. Pika-Pika can either be installed with or without an oil prefinish.
Traditional yakisugi siding is made by charring the surface of Japanese cedar to enhance its durability and aesthetic beauty. Originally used to protect homes from fire, decay, and insects, it’s now a defining material in modern architecture.
