Studio Alexander Fehre as Interior / furniture

Studio Alexander Fehrewas asked to design an office world for the new headquarters of Bosch Automotive Steering. The new buildingwas originally constructed for predecessor ZFLenksysteme, who wanted a building with emblematic character. Following the takeover by Bosch, a new direction was chosen for the site andthe headquarters wererepurposed as a development campus. SAF was asked to illustrate this process of change by redesigning the interior spacewith a focus on inviting, open-plan spaces in place oftraditional office structures, andan inspiring colour world instead ofsharp, black and white contrasts.


The building itself was planned and realised by Wulf Architekten, and consists of two organically flowing structures. It integrates harmoniously into the idyllic green valley in which the factory premises are situated. The floor planwith its convex façades represents a spatial challenge, particularly in the apexes, as the client specifically requested a larger number of meeting spaces and individual offices.


SAFaddressed this problem through the use of space capsules with rounded corners to reflect the overridinglayout. The capsules are positioned a short distance away from the façade, thereby creating an outer corridorsituation.


The outer sides of the capsules integrate recessed niches that provide additional space for small communication zones – some with a table, some with a bench seat, but all with a delightful view of the surroundings.Each of the eight repeating floors is equipped with three of these capsules at the apexes of the building. A larger versionwith a large conference room is located at the centre of the floor. Smaller renditions, positioned at the two flanks of the building,contain a room with a glass façade and a bar table for standing meetings, as well as two ‘focus rooms’ that are peaceful havens for concentrated study.


The capsules have a wooden framework construction and fabric-covered walls. The fabric colour world uses the green of the surrounding landscape as a starting point, with variations on this theme for each floor, giving each onean individual character.


The three capsules are supplemented by team areas with an adjoining kitchenette. With their striking arc lamps and vibrant colour palette, they are communicative meeting places and visual points of attraction on every floor.


The design also tackled the executive board area. The design process was initiated by interviews with the four board members and their assistants. It became clear that the board members mostly envisioned themselves in meetings, so a deliberate decision was taken to strike individual offices. The board now shares an open-plan office at the centre of the space. It is partially glazed and open to one side, signalling an unswervingapproachability that counters hierarchical inhibition thresholds.


As the board members willingly relinquished their traditional spatial privileges, their assistants were able to have a prominent area at the end of one axis. The assistants requested short communication channels, a waiting area for visitors and as much visual connection to the management board and all other rooms as possible. In response, an elevatedisland counter was constructed in prominent position in the space and in the immediate vicinity of the board office. Aspacious waiting area executed in dark colours with various seating arrangements and meeting zones is set opposite. The executive board floor is rounded off by a creative space in dynamic yellow, designed to stimulatethe senses and the thinking process. The flexible furnishings enable a wide diversity of potential usages.


With the design of the Bosch AS headquarters, Studio Alexander Fehreimplements an open work world with diverse quiet havens on a sophisticated floor plan, and succeeds in creating a memorable and visually appealing place. The shape of the spatially determining capsules is derived from the floor plan and thus underscoresthe overall fluidity. The colour world deliberately employs strong contrasts to stimulate communication and provide space for creative thinking. Potential inhibition thresholds have been removed throughout.As a result, the colour and materials worlds of the executive board floor areno different to those of the employee floors.

Bosch Automotive Steering – Customer Center and Parking Garage

The headquarters of Bosch Automotive Steering is located in scenic surroundings at the end of a valley north of SchwäbischGmünd in Baden-Württemberg. Wooded hills surround the factory site, which is crossed by two streams. The comprehensive project comprises the spatial and structural reorganization of a portion of the company premises, including renaturation of the two existing streambeds and redesign of the open spaces. Architecturally, the reorganization is divided into the construction of three key components: a new customer center, a new reception building, and a parking garage with a capacity for more than 800 cars.


The slightly convex curved facades of the reception building and the customer center not only achieve high cost effectiveness in terms of enclosed volume and surface area but also create space in a visually pleasing and efficient manner.


The ground floor of the customer center – with lobby, cafeteria, and a conference and events area – is designed as a shared base that constitutes the center of the new office building. Above the base, the building divides into a five-story section at the south and a seven-story section at the north.


This articulates the building mass, as architecturally desired, while also establishing stepped heights that follow the topographic environment. The southern part of the customer center has a rooftop terrace where people can gather, linger, or even hold meetings. The building’s convex shape affords efficient office layouts: the cores for circulation and sanitary facilities have been consolidated in the center, allowing for optimal arrangement of the individual and open-plan offices and the conference areas.


The facade at the ground level is designed as a glazed, transparent connection to the surrounding outdoor space, giving the spaces inside a bright and airy character. The glass facades are designed with perforated, rotatable vertical slats in front, which filter the surrounding space and make it possible to vary the amount and quality of light that enters inside. The wayfinding system (designed by bürouebele) inside and outside the buildings adopts the basic square shape and colors of Bosch’s previous signage.


With its organic shape, the two-story reception building echoes the architectural expression of the adjacent customer center to the north. Both floors of the new building contain seminar and conference rooms for both internal and external use.


The aim of the project was to create a high-quality and modern work environment, both indoor and outdoors, that vitalizes the site as a whole.
