Located by the new Cool Docks development on the South Bund District of Shanghai, the Waterhouse is a four-story, 19-room boutique hotel built into an existing three-story Japanese Army headquarters building from the 1930’s. The boutique hotel fronts the Huangpu River and looks across at the gleaming Pudong skyline. The architectural concept behind Neri&Hu’s renovation rests on a clear contrast of what is old and new. The original concrete building has been restored while new additions built over the existing structure were made using Cor-Ten steel, reflecting the industrial past of this working dock by the Huangpu River. Neri&Hu’s structural addition, on the fourth floor, resonates with the industrial nature of the ships which pass through the river, providing an analogous contextual link to both history and local culture.

Neri&Hu was also responsible for the design of the hotel’s interior, which is expressed through both a blurring and inversion of the interior and exterior, as well as between the public and private realms, creating a disorienting yet refreshing spatial experience for the hotel guest who longs for an unique five-star hospitality experience. The public spaces allow one to peek into private rooms while the private spaces invite one to look out at the public arenas, such as the large vertical room window above the reception desk and the corridor windows overlooking the dining room. These visual connections of unexpected spaces not only bring an element of surprise, but also force the hotel guests to confront the local Shanghai urban condition where visual corridors and adjacencies in tight nong-tang’s define the unique spatial flavor of the city.

Waterhouse Hotel

Continuing their long-running cooperation with the award-winning architectural firm, Neri & Hu Design (NHDRO), Imondi Flooring is delighted to announce the recent completion of the Waterhouse Hotel at South Bund, a member of Design Hotels.

Located on the banks of the Huangpu River, and adjacent to Shanghai’s latest cultural hotspot, The Cool Docks, The Waterhouse at South Bund is an intimate boutique hotel, utterly original in design. A space that reflects the duality of contemporary Shanghai, where modern and heritage sit alongside one another harmoniously.

The trio of converted early 1930s industrial buildings blend old and new, Western and local, the result is a nong tang turned on its end; what has been called a vertical lane house. The inverted internal & external spaces, create a disorienting yet refreshing spatial experience. Imondi was asked to custom-design a wood floor for the minimalist bedrooms that would fit alongside a mixture of furniture by Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, along with pieces by Antonio Citterio and Kana Ishikawa. The result of this is Imondi’s Como finish

Brand description
Imondi was founded over a decade ago. The year was 1999, around that same time Backstreet Boys released their single ‘I want it that way’. It was a great year. Since then we’ve outgrown 5 offices and 2 factories and now operate a 10,000m2 manufacturing facility that is bursting at the seams with creative woodworkers and makers that have been vital in successfully growing Imondi into an award-winning flooring company in China. We are proud to have faithfully pursued our vision: to nurture a collaborative and people-focused culture because we believe that is what fuels innovation. Now we are 103 people. The youngest is 23 years old. The oldest is 65. One of us has swam with pink dolphins. Whilst we are a diverse group of individuals we take our craft seriously by combining all our creative backgrounds and passion for wood to produce original and innovative floors. Inspired by our Founder ‘s infectious enthusiasm for wood, we at Imondi are obsessed. The list of useful implements that can be crafted from wood is infinite and amazing. We welcome you to avail yourselves of the gorgeous wood we have humbly attempted to shape into beautiful floors. We focus on handcrafted and sustainable slab rescue – working with wood rescued from old boats and barns to the wooden poles in the Venetian canals. We endeavour to make one-of-a-kind floors that highlight the materials from which they are derived. With several design awards acquired during our time, Imondi has grown to be one of China’s leading flooring manufacturers with offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong and The Netherlands. Together with our industry partners, we continue to work towards a better world through design and with our powers combined we will be able to create bigger and better things.
