In the small historic town of Wellington, in Prince Edward County, Drake hotelier and visionary Jeff Stober enlisted design firm +tongtong under the direction of John Tong to reinvent a tired bed and breakfast and original c. 1880 foundry into an 11-room and two-suite contemporary inn. Perched over a meandering creek and a private waterfront, with sweeping views of Lake Ontario, the inn is the rural counterpart to its hip, urban sister, Toronto’s Drake Hotel, also designed by Tong and his former firm, 3rd Uncle. The Drake’s approach was to draw inspiration from the cultural background and vernacular of the local community, while instilling a contemporary perspective. The Drake Devonshire takes aesthetic cues from a lexicon of references including; the British country inn, retreats in the Hamptons, summer camps, and Southern Ontario’s farmhouses and cottages, with their tapestry of historical layers and styles, practical adhoc renovations, readily available building materials, and mismatched furnishings.

With the help of ERA Architects, specialists in heritage and conservation, Tong removed a series of additions that had been made to the original foundry and then “reinstated” them, with seemingly iterative additions. These include a ‘barn like’ pavilion, a Douglas Fir dining hall, a modernist special events space, the Glass Box and an outdoor bar featuring a masonry chimney and double-sided fireplace and its cedar bleachers that cascade to the Devonshire’s waterfront. The public areas offer a variety of open and private seating areas linked together through spaces that frame views and articulate the building’s new volumes and layers, presenting a building as an evolutionary experience, encouraging travellers to discover and delight in its offerings.

Both the guest rooms and the public areas are teeming with doses of the Drake’s brand of idiosyncratic and mischievous personality. Bright and contrasting tiles are mixed with patterned fabrics and straight-forward materials in a deliberate, but seemingly ad-hoc manner that heighten the delicate balance of old and new. Tong and the Drake’s in-house stylist and Drake General Store buyer, Carlo Colacci, scoured local and international antique markets and vintage fairs, picking and curating furniture, fixtures and accessories. These were refurbished and set with bespoke furniture, hand-turned lamps, virgin wool blankets and accessories that all follow the centuries-old tradition of “made not bought”. With the Drake’s in-house art curator Mia Nielsen, site specific and evolving contemporary art installations by emerging and well-known art stars were commissioned to surprise and delight throughout the property—indoors and out.

Quotes “The Drake Devonshire offered an amazing opportunity for us to explore another side of our design approach that has become integral to the Drake Brand. Drawing on the local culture is key to creating an authentic experience for visitors from abroad while also bringing something new and relevant to the local community.

One of our goals was to balance the rational aspects of the architecture with contrasting colours and textures throughout the interior spaces. The outcome is a seemingly ad-hoc collection of controlled compositions and dynamic collisions.” - — John Tong, Creative Director and Designer, +tongtong

“We are offering visitors and locals alike a really fun and inspired experience in one of the most beautiful regions of Canada,” said Jeff Stober founder and CEO of Drake Hotel Properties. “We’ve worked really hard to incorporate a number of classic Drake elements, whether cultural, artistic, design- or service-focused, and we think that our customers will agree it’s been well worth the wait. Obviously, we’re excited to show the world our labour of love that has turned this historic foundry into a playful, sophisticated country inn.” - — Jeff Stober, CEO Drake Hotel Properties

Brand description
Drake Hotel Properties has established itself as not just an arts-infatuated hospitality brand, but as a local cultural community centre; more than a place to eat, drink and sleep and shop, each unique property is filled with personality and buzzing with energy. We’re truly honoured to be able to provide one of Canada’s most unique and sought after hotel and culinary, arts and retail experiences. Our properties include The Drake Hotel, Drake One Fifty, Drake Devonshire Inn and Drake General Store and each reflects their unique neighbourhoods by extending Drake’s much celebrated cultural and hospitality mandate. Curious about how it all started? The Drake Hotel opened its doors on Valentine’s Day 2004 after extensive renovations to our original turn of the century building. From the outset we sought to connect travelers, revelers, neighbours and culture creatures and we think the hard work has paid off. The Drake has come to be known as an energetic hub for visual and performance art as well as dining and hospitality. From live music in the Underground, to award winning cocktails on our climate defiant, year round Sky Yard roof-top patio; from ongoing art exhibits and yummy eats, there's always something happening at our West Queen West outpost. Since its creation in 2008, Drake General Store has played with the notion of taking the traditional hotel gift shop and re-imagining it in a contemporary and varied urban context. By capturing inspiration from the classic general store, the museum shop and the flea market stand, Drake General Store has created a unique destinations for classic and modern goods and goodies. Each store is filled with a sense of whimsy and nostalgia, which caters to the sensible and the not so sensible; travelers and neighbours alike. Opened in October 2013, our first-ever stand-alone restaurant, Drake One Fifty, moves our brand eastward to Toronto’s bustling Financial District and extends our mandate for all things Drake. Meet Drake One Fifty; a chip off the old block, or simply put, Drake without beds: Food. Drink. Art. Staying true to all things Drake, we’re excited about extending our cultural and hospitality mandate next to another outpost, Drake Devonshire Inn, now open in Wellington, Ontario. The art, food and wine happenings that currently exist in Prince Edward County, as well as our beautiful historic Inn that literally hovers over Lake Ontario made the choice to join another incredible community an easy one. With significant refurbishment and expansion alongside seasonal menus, cultural programs, inspiring excursions and a thoughtfully curated permanent art collection, Drake Devonshire will truly be a Drake outpost, Inn the County! Whether you visit us in the city, the County or online, Drake hospitality, culture and community are of paramount importance to us. Mix that with one of our classic Drake cocktails, and we're pretty sure you'll soon see why we're a hotbed for culture. - See more at: http://www.thedrake.ca/history/#sthash.PQNjN7ba.dpuf
